On Saturday 9-17-2011 The Chicago Windy City Lions Helped plant 200 trees in Lake Villa Grant Woods Forest Preserve.

2011-2012 International President Wing-Kun Tam is challenging Lions around the world to plant one million trees this year to demonstrate the strength of our global network.

In Illinois our District Gov. Wes Salsbury and his wife Marcia have asked each club in District 1A to plant one tree. Who knows how many more we will plant worldwide but I think the Windy City Lions will be planting a few more trees this year!

Windy City Lions, Family and Friends helped over 90 other volunteers plant (trees) Shrubs in Grant Woods. Tom Smith and other Forest Preserve staff led the effort as we planted 200 trees in about 3 hours. Our Children and members had fun and our friends rallied to help round out our team. Tom Smith told me that they had the trees but not enough man power to afford to plant them. We pitched in to make this service activity a success.

The Windy City Lions were responsible for at least 25 of the trees that were planted on Saturday!

It was a beautiful day and we were back in Chicago by early afternoon. Thanks to Matt Ueltzen and Tom Smith and all the Forest Preserve employees for making this opportunity a success.

We met another group of Lions from Lake Villa who brought a dozen of their members to help re-establish the prairie. Lion Dominc of Lake Villa Lions, with Windy City Lions team - Jake Morris, Dan Morris, and Blake Trendel.

Today around 2pm we were informed that the drilling crew hit water! It is a really exciting day.

And just about par for the course for this trip I wasn't there to see this happen. So I am sad that I missed this - but extremely happy and proud of our club's accomplishment.

This was a team effort from the day we chartered CWCLC! This proves that when Lions work together they can achieve great things. The borehole project for the village of Dissan will continue. Tomorrow the pump will be installed.

I am headed back to Chicago today, but we are sending our partner club the Sokala Lions members tomorrow to take some pictures to share and to witness this great team achievement.

Thank You to everyone who contributed to the Sports Raffle and other donations to make this borehole happen.

The common theme and dialog among the villagers was , "Without Water there can be no life!"

Good Job Lions!

Sometimes plans change. Yesterday the drilling crew showed up and almost immediately left the sight to go retrieve material and bring a second truck. That second truck was said to have broken down. So Day 3 and we showed up today to no drill crew. The first truck still sits there.

Alternate plan - Mama Tapo, our main Lion contact with the Sokala Lions Club in Bamako, called an audible and fired the first crew. He arranged for a second crew to arrive on Sunday. We will travel with them on Sunday. they will have all the materials and have projected water on Monday. Pump company will arrive on Tuesday and Cement. If all goes as planned that's plan "B".

Laura and I took our boys to the club's project at he Greater Chicago Food Depository and they were a little wary of hours of manual labor. But they enjoyed it and worked feverishly for two hours, trying to outpack other tables even though no one was keeping track of each table's output. By the end of the afternoon they were a little tired but entirely satisfied. I think they got an idea of the need out there and understood if somebody doesn't volunteer the work doesn't get done and families get by with even less.
