Sports Ticket Raffle to Benefit Children, Mothers, Others in Mali

Young children strapped to their back, the mothers in Dissan draw water from deep wells with buckets attached to donkeys. The labor is hard and the water is contaminated. In the West African nation of Mali, culturally rich but materially poor, dirty water often means a death sentence for the most vulnerable. A full 20 percent of children do not reach the age of 5.
Lions in Mali have worked with Lions in the United States to provide boreholes for villages. The clean water has saved lives and enabled villagers to grow vegetables and fruits to sell and eat. “It would take an entire day for me to tell you all the benefits clean water has bought to my village,” says Teneima Samaka, the chief of Morodiomdougou. “Water is life,” says Yananoussou Dolo, a Lion in Mali.
The Chicago Windy City Lions Club will bring clean water and new life to Dissan by working with Lions in Mali to drill a borehole there. The lack of clean water has devastated Dissan, known as an “abandoned” village. Its 1,000 people, who live in huts and farm and raise cattle, struggle mightily without a school or dispensary. Families from outside the village refuse to allow their daughters to marry men from Dissan. The dirty water has contaminated the entire fabric of life.
Lions in Mali will provide the labor and expertise. The Chicago Windy City Lions will direct the project.
